One Way to Make Life Easier for your Family – Lasting Powers of Attorney

An article in The Guardian NewsPaper from February 2016 (http://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/feb/03/caring-for-older-parents-funding-elderly-social-care) highlights the struggles carers from all walks of life endure on a daily basis.

New analysis by Michael Hirst of the Social Policy Research Unit at the University of York, carried out on behalf of Carers UK, estimates that nearly 6000 family members become carers every day because something happens to a loved one. Caring is not an easy role and with an increasingly ageing population, the likelihood is that more of us will have experience of it.

Whether the person requiring care has a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place will dictate to what extent the family have control over the situation.

When someone is no longer able to make their own decisions an LPA allows their chosen individuals (Attorney) to make decisions on their behalf – This can be in relation to health & care needs or finances & property.

Without an LPA in place, your family will have to refer to The Court of Protection (a very lengthy, costly and bureaucratic process) even in relation to seemingly mundane decisions and that someone who has never met you will be making all the decisions. Choosing to write your LPA means choosing to give your loved ones control.
